👶🏼👶🏼 The Beginning
Our journey started in the NICU — my twins were micro-preemies, arriving four months early and just 2 lbs. From the very start, their paths were different, but both were filled with resilience, challenges, and surprises. We knew their journeys would be unique. And they were.
🦅 A Daughter Who Soared
My daughter was reading by the time she was two years old. By kindergarten, she was the child who brought books to nap time and read aloud to her friends instead of sleeping. By age nine, she was reading at a college level. While I was amazed, it also created a challenge I wasn’t prepared for: finding books that were difficult enough to challenge her but still age-appropriate for a child.
✈️ A Son on His Own Path
My son's journey looked very different. He faced vision challenges and dysgraphia, which made reading and writing a rougher road from the start. But he also had a determination all his own. Sometimes he let his sister read aloud to him, turning storytime into a sibling bond. Other times, the right book — one that matched his interests and his pace — lit him up with excitement. He needed more encouragement, more patience, and stories that kept him engaged at his level.
🏃♀️ The Parent Struggle
As working parents, my husband and I were stretched thin. Every trip to the library or bookstore felt like a scavenger hunt: trying to find one set of books for her advanced level but still kid-appropriate, and another set that would capture his interest without overwhelming him. On top of that, schools require quarterly Accelerated Reader® (AR) points to encourage children to read and excel. For advanced readers, the AR levels and points were sometimes too low, making it an arduous task to find appropriate books. It became a constant challenge to match the right AR books to our twins’ level and interests.
